“If you feel like taking a sick leave every morning, it’s time to look for a job that doesn’t make you sick.”
My understanding
I don’t know who said it but this quote is such a truthful reminder about the importance of work that aligns with our well-being. If I wake up every morning feeling like I need a sick leave, it’s a clear sign that something is off. It’s not just about the job itself. It’s about the impact it has on my mental, emotional, and physical health.
This idea connects deeply with the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which is about finding the intersection of what I love, what I’m good at, what the world needs, and what I can be paid for. A job that aligns with Ikigai brings purpose and fulfillment, rather than stress and dread. But this isn’t just true for work. If a friendship feels draining every time we connect, it might be time to reflect. If a hobby no longer sparks joy, it might be worth exploring something new.
This quote pushes me to reflect on my work, relationships, and even daily routines. Is each of them something I truly care about? Do they support my growth and happiness? If the answer is no, it’s time to make a change. Life is too short to spend it on things that make me sick—inside or out.
