It’s better to have 100 people love you than one million people that sort of like you.

Paul Graham

My understanding

I really like this quote from Paul Graham (the co-founder of Y Combinator). He said it’s better to have a small group of people who really love and support you, rather than a huge group of people who just kinda like you.

This makes sense to me because having strong, loyal relationships with a smaller group of people can be way more meaningful and helpful than trying to be popular with a big crowd.

I think this quote is especially important for people who are trying to build a community or a business. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, it’s better to focus on creating something that a smaller group of people will really love and be passionate about. This is what Brian Chesky (the CEO of Airbnb), did when he was building his company, and it clearly worked out well for him. Brian Chesky has referenced this advice as influential in his approach to developing the Airbnb platform and community.

This quote also makes me think about my own relationships and goals. Depth matters more than breadth. Instead of trying to be friends with everyone or get a million followers on social media, I should focus on building strong connections with the people who really matter to me. By doing so, I can create a supportive community that will help me achieve my goals and be there for me when I need them.

Reminds me

  1. From Dieter Rams, “Limit everything to the essential, but do not remove the poetry.”

  2. “A fool with a tool is still a fool.” I don’t know who said that, but it reminds me that tools, no matter how advanced, don’t replace knowledge or skill.
